The Enneagram is a complex system that can guide our efforts to change the particular and repetitive aspects of how we think, feel, and act (patterns) that limit us and get in the way of achieving the results we want. While we all can identify with all of the types in one way or another, we tend to fixate or see and act in the world from one specific type.
This is a very basic guide to Type 5. Type 5 represents that part in all of us that feels separate and disconnected from everything else. Regardless of our type, we can discover the wisdom of the journey from avarice to non-attachment that Type 5 faces every day and teaches us about.
Center of Intelligence: Head
Focus of Attention: Fives focus on gaining knowledge and information without getting too involved.
Behavior: Reserved, introverted, analytical, and objective. They seem distant.
Feeling: Fives have the ability to process feelings in private. They can detach from their emotions in the moment. Highly sensitive, very seldom show their emotions in public.
Thinking: Fives are very much in their head. Perceive needs of others as a burden. They’re interested in managing their time and energy.
Passion —Avarice: the passion of Fives is about holding back and holding in, not necessarily about greed. In their effort to conserve energy, Fives remain distant and detached, holding back from the world and holding in emotions.
Path to Integration: Avarice refers to grasping or conserving, especially energy. Trying to understand the world through the accumulation of information removing the self from the world (distancing) will only provide a partial view. Being able to “be” with the world with non-attachment —without grasping—allows for participation of the natural flow of life.
